Barcelona in Spring

Barcelona is an unexpected gem of architecture, outdoor life, unparalleled spas and shopping. It was initially our departure and return port during our Mediterranean cruise, but we decided to stay 3 extra days after our disembark and get to know more about Barcelona.

Shopping

Our boutique hotel was situated along a large shopping district. We took advantage of the ideal location and found a beautiful pair of Spanish red suede pump heels that I fell in love with, and they came with a free bottle of champagne. Where else in the world would you find boutique shops like this?

The shops, cafes and businesses get buzzing early in the morning the gusto of a full shot of espresso. But, the Spanish siesta is still in full effect. Most businesses close up mid-day for at least an hour, sometimes longer. Don’t expect for there to be hours on the doors, or any level of expectations. They show up when they’re ready.

This is a walking town. The entire city is built on the side of a huge hill. It was well planned, with a well preserved gothic quarter, the subsequent growth was well planned with sprawling city parkways. Throughout the avenues city parks visitors are welcomed by miles of shared green space, playgrounds, bocce ball courts, wandering musicians and the respite of park benches.

Throughout the town we peeked into local food markets, grocery stores and cafes, amazed by the selection of eccentric local dishes, the size of produce and the overall health of the local patrons. It all adds up.

Architecture

The one thing that I knew about Barcelona before going to Spain was the importance of the architecture of Antoni Gaudi, the most unconventional modern style that I have ever seen. His style is undeniably recognizable and I wanted to make sure to see some of these amazing buildings in person.

Gaudi’s Barcelona home and series of other buildings were expanded and developed into Park Güell. Situated at the top of the hill overlooking all of Barcelona, Park Guell offers amazing day-long meandering climb leading to unprecedented city views. Plan to bring a bottle of water, stay hydrated and stay safe.

Along the way, we were inspired by the arches and stonework of the Colonia Güell which we later learned was an unfinished church that Gaudi was commissioned to build near his home. Other beautiful and iconic buildings including Sagrada Família, Casa Vicens, and Casa Milá (La Pedrera) can all be found throughout the city, all within walking distance from the city center.

Spa Time

The easy going type of lifestyle that makes Spain so inspiring also makes Barcelona an amazing destination for a relaxing spa escape. Over the course of 3 days we had walked over 15 miles, up and down the giant hill of a city. As a result, we indulged in a spa day. Pampering is always best enjoyed at the end of a very fulfilling, exciting vacation.

From start to finish Barcelona was an outdoor adventure filled with unexpected outcrops and encounters with locals. The arts, culture and hospitality make Barcelona an experience unlike any other.
